This has to be, by far, one of my favorite smooth jazz pieces.
An it’s from my old saxophone teacher’s recital-almost a decade ago. He’s the cat that introduced me jazz - Chris Carbajal. Here he is playing with his smooth jazz teacher, Walter Beasley. In Chris’s solo, he gives you so much pocket that it gives your body a second heartbeat. his improvisational form is impeccable - He gives you smooth, groove, jazz, bebop in one solo. Wholetones, tritone substitutions, sequences and repetitions…sickness. (his solo starts at 4:58) You can tell the band is totally feelin’ his solo - listen for that break at 6:23 you’ll hear nothing but silence…then you’ll hear the crowd go nuts.
Best part is the battle with Walter Beasley and Chris Carbajal. awesome.
